Create an Activity:

If you would like to participate by putting together and leading an activity, see our instruction page on Leading an Activity and email sarabeth@bu.edu. We would love to have mentors create their own activities for the girls!

Daily Schedule:

4:00 pm – (If you are free to join early!!): Meet in the lobby of the WEH to help recruit girls. Look for elementary-school aged girls, and meet them/tell them about Girls’ Science Club.
4:45 pm – Prep the classroom for the activity.
5:00 pm – Girls’ Science Club officially starts. Form a circle, everyone introduces themselves (nametags), take attendance. Go over ground rules — respect each other, one person talks at a time, etc. Distribute worksheets.
5:10 pm – Julia will introduce the lava lamp activity. We will go over the key words (density, solubility), and as a group will create a hypothesis about what will happen.
5:25 pm – We will all help the girls do the lava lamp activity. We can also help them jot down answers to their worksheets.
5:55 pm – Re-group and briefly conclude the activity. We can summarize results of the activity and discuss the key words. We’ll distribute candy, and encourage them to come next week (and bring friends)! We will mention that over the semester, if they come to at least 5 activities, they can win a special prize.
6:00 pm – Clean-up and debrief with the mentors. We usually check in about pros and cons for the current days activity and talk about next week’s activity.
